The book, As a Man Thinketh, by James Allen, is a good read when addressing the topic of mindset. The number one reason for success or failure in sales, in growing an organization, or in building a relationship, is our mindset. Most days my brain is full of many thoughts. A lot of those thoughts are not ones that I would share with others.
We also develop bias about other people or other cultures that are not helpful in building relationships. I remember that someone shared a negative opinion with me about another employee. Every time that I interacted with the employee, the thought came to mind about what was said as though it were 100% true. I would have been better off in my relationship cleaning the slate and giving the employee a chance to prove themselves with 100% of my support and belief that they could do a good job.
Mindset also has a bit to do about attitude. How do I perceive the current situation? Is there a role in the organization that I can contribute, that I can add value, that I can learn and grow? My attitude or my belief about the value of that role is an important part of mindset. Having a positive mindset is important.

Over the years, I have learned many ways to maintain a positive mindset.
- Set goals for the week, month, year or more.
- Develop action plans for how I can reach my goals.
- Identify motivators and rewards along the way as I develop the habits I need in order to reach my goals.
- Share my goals with others who I know to be a positive force in support and accountability.
- Visualize my goals or capture visual images that will remind me what I am working toward.
Mindset is an important part of our lives. Recognizing our negative or doubtful thoughts and replacing these thoughts with positive thoughts and energy toward our goals is an critical step in maintaining a positive mindset.
